June 1905 : August Vanderschaeghe migrated from Belgium to the USA.  Destination : Iron Belt, WI.

1906 - 1909 : August lived in Iron Belt, WI  where he worked in an iron ore mine.  Michael and Rudolph were born there.

1910 - 1914 : August and Eugenie lived in Savage, MN where their son Wilbert and their daughters Mary and Philomena were born.

1918 : They were living in Hinckley, MN

1926 : They were living in Cloverdale, MN on a farm where Lillian was born.

1930 : They were living in Sandstone, MN on a poultry farm.

1933 : They moved back to Iron Belt, WI

1938 - 1947 : They lived in Knight, WI, where August worked as laborer on the WPA Sewer Project and they raised chickens and sold them and eggs to the local stores.

1947 - 1960 :  They lived in Iron Belt, WI.

1960 -          :  They moved to Pence, WI. after the state took their home for a new highway.

August and his wife, Eugenie DeVos, accompanied by their son Valere and their daughter Selma Marie came to America in 1905. Three additional children, Sarah, Martha and Flora were born to this union but died as babies.

The following is from Johan Verplancke of Belgium:
He was the first of the Vanderschaeghe-familymembers who emigrated. He travelled with his family : his wife Eugenie De Vos and their son Valère and their daughters Zulma and Martha.  They travelled on board of the
Kroonland, a ship of the Red Star Line.  The ship departed from Antwerpen
(Belgium) on 10/06/1905 and arrived at New York on 20/06/1905.  As
destination for his passage he gave : friend Alphonse Vervalle, Hurley WI.

AD 1879 April, 4th, 10:00 AM, before us Bernardus Devisschere, "alderman", civil servant charged to take care of the registry office of the village of Ruddervoorde, district of Bruges, province of West-Flanders, has appeared : Henri Vanderschaeghe, nurseryman, 30 years old, born in Wingene and living in Ruddervoorde, who has shown us a baby male, born here today at 04:00 AM, a child of him and of Philomena De Corte, his wife, housekeeper, 27 years old, born and living in Ruddervoorde. He declares he want to give the baby as first name Auguste.  The declaration and presentation mentioned above happened in the presence of Henri Deneweth,
"town clerk", 28 years old and René Devriese, policeman, 42 years old.
Both witnesses aren't relatives of the father, and both live in Ruddervoorde.

The father and the two witnesses did sign this certificate after it has been read to them.

These declaration and presentation happened in the presence of Francies Van Paemel, worker, 52 years old, and Sebastianus Noë, shopkeeper, 59 years old; both witnesses are no relatives of the father and they both live in Ruddervoorde.After the certificate had been read to them, thefirst witness joined us in signing it; the father and the second witness didn't sign because they couldn't.

The following is from Phill VanDerSchaegen: In the 1950s and early 60s (the mine closed in about 1963) Dad was very active in the union(AFL/CIO Steelworkers). I remember meetings in our house and him going to conventions in Duluth. He would come home from the conventions and talk about meeting the Democrat politicians; e.g. Hubert Humphrey.

He was on-and-off Chairman in the Iron County Democratic Party. I recall having campaign signs, buttons and matchbooks around the house during every major election. He would pass that stuff out.

of the village of Ruddervoorde, province of West-Flanders, has appeared : August Vanderschaeghe, innkeeper, 24 years old, born and living in Ruddervoorde, who has presented us a female child, born in Ruddervoorde today at 04:00 AM; a child of him and of Eugenie Devos, his wife, housekeeper, 20 years old, born and living in Ruddervoorde. He declared he wants to give her the following first names : Zulma Maria Godelieva.

These declaration and presentation happened in the presence of August Devos, 52 years old, worker, living in Ruddervoorde and of Henricus Vandew……  42 years old, worker,
living in Ruddervoorde.  And after the certificate had been read to them, we have signed.  Immediately this certificate has been made at the town hall.  The father has signed also.  Both witnesses didn't because they couldn't.

Occupation: He lived in Shakapee, Orchard Gardens, Cloverdale and Sandstone around 1928.

A farmer in the early years, He labored for the village of Sandstone and was a Marshall.
He worked on a survey crew for the MNDOT and the State hospitals at Sandstone and Cambridge, retiring as a psychiatric aide,  in 1968.

Then for a while  he drove ambulance for Hospital in Sandstone.
He played the drums, consertina & mouth organ for dances when he was younger.

He loved pitching baseball, was a champion horseshoe pitcher, won local tournaments in golf, did well in bowling and loved sports of all kinds.

His mother called him Cocha.(my spelling, Pete)
